Archaeological Department
Since its establishment, the Archaeological Department of the National Museum of Montenegro has been engaged in the excavation and protection of archaeological sites in the territory of eight municipalities of the Zlatibor District.
So far, around 1,000 archaeological sites have been discovered and recorded, as well as a large number of individual finds from prehistoric, ancient and medieval periods.
Archaeological excavations have formed rich collections of objects:
- Prehistoric
- Antique
- Medieval
- Numismatic collection up to the 15th century
- Epigraphic monuments
Documentation department
The Documentation Department of the National Museum of Užice began operating in the 1990s, and during that period and somewhat later, the digitization of existing documentation and the inclusion of the NMU in the Museum Information System of Serbia began.
Ethnographic Department
With the establishment of the National Museum in 1963, with the Museum of the 1941 Uprising and the Homeland Museum as its members, the Ethnographic Department of the Homeland Museum was also formed, which continues to conduct field reconnaissance and collect ethnographic material from the Tito Vužić region.
The ethnographic collection is formed from objects collected during field reconnaissance and research, as well as gifts, purchases, and accidental finds. The objects date mainly from the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries.
The entire ethnographic material is classified into thematic units that make up collections, within which there are smaller subject collections and collections:
- Collection of costumes
- Collection of home textiles
- Collection of fiber processing equipment
- Collection of musical instruments
- Collection of pipes and smoking accessories
- Collection of furniture and dishes
- Collection of crafts
- Collection of jewelry
History Department
The History Department is the first department of the National Museum of Užice to be established, which, through its many years of field research, as well as work in professional and scientific institutions, has acquired valuable museum material relating to the period from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 21st century, and the most general division of collections and funds is:
- Collection of three-dimensional objects
- Collection of photographs from the 19th century to 1945.
- Collection of contemporary history
- Numismatic collection from the period 15-20
- Collection of archival materials
- Collection of memoir materials 1941-1945.
- Collection of firearms and cold weapons and military equipment
Conservation Department
Conservation and restoration activities were initially carried out through the NMU preparation and conservation workshop, with the engagement of specialized workshops from other institutions. In the mid-1990s and with the recruitment of new experts, conservation activities expanded and were organized within three workshops, namely:
- Workshops for metal, archaeological wood, bone, glass and stone
- Workshops for ceramics, textiles and leather
- Workshops for icon painting and easel painting
In addition to working on the protection of museum objects, the NMU conservation workshops also provide services to other cultural institutions, the Serbian Orthodox Church and individuals.
Department for Preventive Protection and Maintenance of Monuments within the Territorial Jurisdiction of the National Museum of Užice
Since its establishment, the Kadinjača Memorial Complex, in addition to scientific research, collection, protection and presentation of movable cultural heritage, and publishing activities, has also had the task of recording, recording, preventive protection and maintenance of monuments on the territory of the Municipality of Titovo Užice. In this way, the Department for Preventive Protection and Maintenance of Monuments was formed, which in the 1990s expanded its territorial jurisdiction and formed a file of monuments and other memorials. In cooperation with the competent Institutes for the Protection of Cultural Monuments from Belgrade and Kraljevo, this department has implemented several projects, the most significant of which is the reconstruction of the log church in Sevojno.
Department of Art History
With the establishment of the Department of Art History within the National Museum of Užice, the Art Collection was formed, and the systematic study and publication of the objects belonging to it began, which mainly testify to the cultural history of Užice through the centuries.
The art collection is classified into:
- Collection of Fine and Applied Arts
- Collection of Ecclesiastical Art
- Collection of Sculptures
The Department’s experts also take care of the Legacy of the painter Mihailo Milovanović, opened in 2003 in the building of the National Museum of Užice.
Pedagogical service
Cultural-educational and informational-marketing activities are carried out through permanent exhibitions, thematic exhibitions, organized lectures in and outside the museum premises, screening films in the Museum, through public information media, presentations through promotions and other content, with the intention of introducing the general public to the past and cultural heritage of the Užice region.
This activity includes cooperation with schools, the army, associations, socio-political and economic organizations through various types of activities, with the aim of bringing cultural values closer to as many people as possible.
Professional Museum Library
It is a specialized library within the NMU institution, which has about 12,000 books and titles from the museum’s specialized fields. In addition to books, periodicals, magazines and newspapers, the library also has a significant collection of the first Serbian handwritten and printed books and a collection of Turkish manuscripts.
The library fund is enriched through purchases, exchanges, redemptions and gifts, as well as through the sale of its own publications.
In addition to museum experts and associates, the library fund is also used by a large number of students, pupils, cultural and scientific workers, journalists, etc.
Photo laboratory
The filming and documentary activity, in addition to filming museum material for the needs of collections and funds, also includes monitoring the implementation of museum actions and projects, as well as filming the most significant events from the area of the city of Užice and the Zlatibor district for the needs of the Department of Contemporary History.
In addition to a large number of films, negatives and slides from which thousands of photographs have been made, the museum also possesses a large number of video recordings.
